Internet and Intranet

SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0 provides web server capabilities with a complete set of features for accessing information on the Internet and within your Intranet.

• The Apache Web Server is updated to version 1.3.33 in this release. Also PHP is updated to version 4.3.11 and Perl scripting language is updated to version 5.8.6.

• The Tomcat Application Server for Java servlets, version 4.1.31, is included for the first time. Tomcat enables SCO OpenServer to run and display Java applets. Tomcat is available from the SCO OpenServer Optional Services CD-ROM.

• Web browser options include Mozilla, version 1.7.8 and Lynx, version 2.8.5.

  The current version of Mozilla supports JavaScript version 1.5 and conforms to ECMAScript Language Spec, Edition 3.

  See ``X clients'' for some issues with this release of Mozilla.

• Squid, version 2.5, is a full-featured proxy server for caching files and web pages. This server makes HTTP, FTP, and other requests and caches the results for serving future requests more quickly. This product is available from the SCO OpenServer Optional Services CD-ROM.

• SCO PPP from Morning Star, release 2.2.0, provides the PPP implementation for SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0. This product provides multilink support, compression, and support for up to 256 concurrent links.

• SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0 supports the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition, version 1.4.2_08 for running Java code. See ``Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE)'' for details.

The following Internet/Intranet components are no longer provided in SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0:

• SCOadmin Internet Configuration Manager

Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE)

The Java 2 Standard Edition, version 1.4.2_08 (1.4.2Ha) for SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0 is a full implementation of the Sun Microsystems Java 2 Platform -- the technology and environment described in the Sun specifications of the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition, v. 1.4.2_08. The _08 suffix indicates the patch level of the Sun J2SE to which the J2SE 1.4.2 for SCO OpenServer corresponds. J2SE 1.4.2_08 contains the latest set of security fixes from Sun.

The complete J2SE 1.4.2 release is installed during the SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0 installation. The J2SE includes:

• the Java 2 Runtime Environment, which allows SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0 end users to run Java applets and applications on SCO operating systems.

• the Java 2 Software Development Kit (J2SDK), which enables SCO OEMs, ISVs, and end users to develop Java applets and applications that conform to the Java 2 Core API.

• the Java 2 plugin for the Mozilla web browser.

The J2SE product is installed in /opt/java2-1.4.2. JVM and JDK commands are located in the /bin directory. As with other SCO systems, /usr/java and /usr/java2 are symbolic links to /opt/java2-1.4.2. All commands are, therefore, accessible through /usr/java/bin/<command>.

The Release Notes for the J2SE 1.4.2 are installed on your system in /usr/java/ReleaseNotes.html and /usr/java/ReleaseNotes.txt.

Note that Java 1.3.1 and earlier implementations are not available for SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0, and in some cases there are known problems running Java applications with those implementations. It is recommended that all Java applications on SCO OpenServer Release 6.0.0 run with J2SE 1.4.2.
