The C++ Standard Components were originally developed within AT&T® Bell Laboratories, with some of the components participating in the evolution of the C++ language itself. Beginning in 1987, there were three consecutive internal releases of the components within AT&T, encompassing a substantial number of users.
By 1991, development and distribution of the components was taken over by UNIX System Laboratories. The first release of C++ Standard Components to the general computing industry was Release 2.0 in 1991, followed by Release 3.0 in 1992.
In 1993, Novell acquired UNIX System Laboratories and took over development and distribution of Standard Components. Beginning in 1994, the components became part of Novell's UnixWare product, as part of the UnixWare Software Development Kit. Novell also continued to market Standard Components to the general computing industry. In 1996, SCO acquired Novell's UNIX business and took over development and maintenance of Standard Components for SCO OpenServer.
