Printing

SCO OpenServer provides two print subsystems: the traditional System V LP Subsystem (LP) and the Common UNIX Print Subsystem (CUPS). Both subsystems are installed as part of the base operating system.

There are two options for administering CUPS:

  • if you want the default system printer to be a CUPS-managed printer, edit /etc/default/lpd and change the PRINT_SYSTEM value from ``SYSV'' to ``CUPS''.

When you make this change, the Printer Manager is reconfigured to automatically launch the CUPS web-based administration tool.

  • if you want to use both CUPS and regular System V printing (lp):

    • use the SCOadmin Printer Manager to administer lp.

    • use the CUPS web-based administration tool. To run this tool directly, launch a browser and specify the following URL:
      http://localhost:631

When you log into the CUPS administration tool, it assumes that you are the root user -- enter the root password. Note that CUPS that restricts the root password to alphanumeric characters. If your root password uses special characters, you will not be able to log in to the CUPS web-based administration tool until you change the root password to comply with these restrictions.
