Configuring the Domain Name Service (DNS)

Stub service

When a primary server delegates a portion of the domain name space, such as a subzone, it needs to maintain information about the servers in that subzone. For example, the primary server in the domain il.us needs to be aware of the name servers in chi.il.us. It can do so in two ways: by either serving chi.il.us as a secondary name server, or by serving it as a stub server.

A stub server only maintains records needed to locate the name servers of a delegated subzone. It does not maintain a full database of address (and other) records for that subzone. This allows the administrators of the subzone to move or alter their name servers without altering the parent zone's configuration files, as long as the address listed in the stub line is still valid.
