Configuring the Domain Name Service (DNS)

Remote servers

A remote server runs client software but handles resolution remotely. In a sense, the remote server is not a server at all, but a client. This scheme allows computers with limited memory or CPU cycles to use the name server without the overhead of maintaining database files. All queries are answered by a server that is running on another computer on the network. The server's IP address is configured in /etc/resolv.conf.
