System requirements

Please visit the SCO Certified and Compatible Hardware (CHWP) web page (http://www.sco.com/chwp) to verify that your hardware is supported and to determine the correct driver to use for supported hardware. If you use drivers and peripherals that are not listed as supported, your peripherals might not work.

SCO OpenServer installations have the following minimum requirements:

Processor

• A single Intel^® Celeron^®, Pentium^®, Pentium II, Pentium II Xeon, Pentium III, Pentium III Xeon, Pentium 4, or Intel Xeon microprocessor, or a microprocessor that is 100% compatible (e.g., AMD Athlon, Athlon 64, Duron, Sempron, or Opteron processor). Up to 32 processors are supported in multiprocessor configurations.

• Use of a Pentium 4 or equivalent is recommended.

  (Note that installing on systems slower than 400 Mhz can take several hours.)

• 64MB or more of RAM (Random Access Memory) is required. When running graphically-intensive applications like Java or KDE, a minimum of 128MB of RAM is required.

• 256MB of memory is recommended. For optimal performance of the system when running graphically-intensive applications, 512MB of RAM is recommended.

• Up to 16GB for General Purpose memory and up to 64GB as Dedicated Memory is supported. Dedicated memory is limited for use as either Shared Memory (SHM) or Dynamic Shared Memory (DSHM).

• At least 1 HBA is required, and up to 32 HBAs are supported by default. Additional HBAs (to a maximum of 1024) can be added; however, the driver for any HBA added above 32 must support such a configuration.

• SCO OpenServer supports IDE, SCSI, SAS, SATA, and USB configurations.

• A hard disk of 8GB or larger is recommended. To install all of the packages included in the media kit, you need a minimum of 4GB of disk space.

  Minimal installations can run on partitions as small as 1GB but this requires that you de-select most non-essential software and reduce the swap (and possibly boot) slice size.

• SCO OpenServer Release 6 supports disk drives up to 1TB in capacity.

• The UNIX boot partition for a large capacity hard drive can begin above the 8GB boundary. SCO OpenServer uses extended BIOS calls to overcome previous constraints where the UNIX boot partition was required to begin below cylinder 1024 of the boot disk and within the first 8GB.

• A serial, USB, or PS/2-compatible mouse is required for graphical desktop functionality.

• A Network Interface Card (NIC) is only required for installation if you are performing a network installation.

• At least 1 NIC is required for networking; multiple NICs are supported, but only a maximum of 4 NICs of the same manufacturer and model can be connected at the same time.

• The video adapter used during the SCO OpenServer Release 6 installation must have an IBM VGA compatible mode.

• An SVGA monitor and video adapter capable of at least 1024x768 resolution is required to run one of the graphical desktop options.

• One of the following installation media devices is required:

  • a bootable CD-ROM drive and a BIOS that supports booting from the installation CD-ROM. (See ``Installation boot devices'' for more information.)

  • a supported network adapter and a preconfigured network installation server for network installation. (See ``Installing SCO OpenServer products over the network'' in the New Features and Notes online documentation topic for more information.)
