Deleting and recovering files and directories

To delete files and directories: Drop the corresponding icons onto the Trash icon. Alternatively, you can select the icons that you want to discard, then select Discard from the File menu. The discarded file and directory icons remain in the Trash desktop until you empty the Trash or recover the files and directories.

To recover files or directories from the Trash desktop: Open the Trash window and either double-click on the desired icons or select Restore from the File menu. Files and directories are restored to their original locations.

To empty the Trash desktop: Choose Empty from the Trash icon menu or from the File menu on the Trash desktop. For information on icon menus, see ``Using icons''.

If your system administrator has enabled the Undelete feature, you can retrieve old versions of files with this recovery method: In the directory in which the file or directory originally existed, select Undelete from the File menu. The Undelete desktop is displayed, containing that directory's recoverable files and directories.

To recover files or directories from the Undelete desktop, either:

Files and directories are restored to their original locations.

To permanently remove files and directories: Select Delete permanently from the icon menu or from the Undelete desktop File menu.
